Marching orders

The month began for me on the windswept bluffs above Tomales bay.

Marconi, a visionary, built an antenna station here 100 years ago as part of a worldwide chain that would transmit radio waves around the globe.

Later, much later, the site was run by hippies.. It was known as Synanon. This went down in a scandal, like many cultish groups.

Today it's a lovely conference center on State Park land. You can drive there from San Rafael in 30 minutes, and take a nice hill hike, or walk on the old route 57, which was the old stage road.
