Barb & I were discussing the varying talents and good looks of three actors this morning. I grouped them by similar look and feel. What do you think, do these three belong together, seeing them side by side? I guess it's the eyes.

Usually we take advantage of Super Bowl Sunday by doing things like hiking or shopping or other things that are so much more pleasant when hordes of people stay away. We did just that during the brief window of sun, yesterday, and hiked Baltimore Canyon with Eve, Deena, and four kids.

Coming back to Eve's for a birthday sushi feed, we noted that the game was still on, and Deena cared about the score, so we tuned in for the second half. What was interested to me was that Jeremy and Aidan (now aged 5 and a half) really cared about learning the game. And Deena and I cared about teaching it to them. It's harder than I thought to explain the rules of football. Instant replay really helps.. you can explain something, and then the network conveniently shows it again and again, to really highlight the fine points.

Here's a funny thing I never really thought about until I tried to explain it.. why do they call the achievement of yardage a "first down," when all the action ENDS when the ball goes down? And I discovered that I really don't know what "offsides" means. But I do know the gesture for it.

When we moved to our new work facility last summer, there was a dictum that came "down", demanding that we all be satisfied with our new work spaces, because no one would be allowed to move for at least six months. However, the spaces were not satisfactory for many of us. Mine in particular was dark, crowdy and noisy, and no database developer could hope to get any work done in that place. I was able to wheedle a switcheroo out of my supervisor, and escaped to the silent sunny climes of the third floor loft, where I sit with a beautiful view on every side, a window that opens, a private elevator, and no others to disturb me. However, the move was not "official", and everyone said "keep it quiet". Today, my bosses' boss asked me, "are you still on the third floor?" and when I said yes, he said, "well, so far no one has said anything about it!". This is strange, because I thought HE was the one who wouldn't allow the moves! Apparently the dictum has been absorbed... no one remembers who said it, it has become the air we breathe. I said I would lay low, if that is indeed possible on the top floor of a very large building.

Take a one minute vacation any time you want. This very cool website has sound bytes from all over the world that can instantly transport you somewhere else. One Minute Vacations

By the way, when we were in Maui we saw advertised an Indian restaurant called the Taj Mahalo. (Mahalo means thank you in Hawaiian.) We searched for it but never found it to take the requisite photo.
