It was a perfect day in May. We went hiking on Monday up on the Terra Linda/Sleepy Hollow divide. Great views of our valley... In this shot of San Pedro Mountain, you can see the bright blue roof of the Marin Civic Center (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright), with the bay beyond. Our house is nestled at the far left of the mountain. We are having one of the best wildflower years ever. We were sorry to read a notice on this trail that in the next few years they will be removing most of the beautiful eucalyptus trees that line the ridge. They are not native to the area, so they have become an target for those wanting to reduce fire risk in the hills where too many homes have been built. As summer heat builds up (finally! it has been such a long, cool spring), the hills put on their gorgeous summer colors.

How interesting that Bob's blog today references the Moon Illusion. Just last week, as I was driving home from chorus, the full moon rose. Although I know intellectually that it's an illusion, I still can't believe it. I had my camera with me, so I pulled off the freeway and snapped a photo. The evidence proves that it is merely a moon the size of any moon seen at any time, however, in my memory it will loom ever so large and glorious.

When Barb is talking on the phone, especially when she is interviewing someone, she tends to pace around the backyard with her headset on, gesticulating wildly. The other day I tried to catch a photo of her, because it's so HER, it's so delightful to watch. I didn't happen to snap the shutter while her arms were moving, but you get the sense of her, oblivious to the scents and sights of the yard, while she focused on the task at hand.

The Q sang the national anthem at Infineon Raceway this weekend. I have never been to a race track before, and it was certainly different! I can't say that I share the love and affection that many people have for the sound of combustible engines. However there is no denying that they love it, and I do enjoy watching people experiencing their passion, whatever that might be. The classic custom cars were fun to look at, and the hot rods were right out of a comic book. I'll have some photos soon to post from this event.

This is the description of what it was, from the website. You definitely need to develop a new lexicon when you join this sport.
The Goodguys/K&N Filters 15th Nitro Nationals Drag Races. This event, the second stop in the 2003 Goodguys VRA drag racing series, will feature more than 400 race cars in quarter-mile drag racing action. On-track racing will include 250-mph, front-engine Top Fuel dragsters, blown alcohol coupes & sedans, gassers, altereds & hundreds more competing in 12 different classes of competition. A vendor midway and a car show with more than 500 1972 and older street rods, customs, classics, muscle cars, trucks and street machines will also be featured.

Normally, the front page of the Chronicle doesn't make me cry, except perhaps in frustration. But today's story about a woman who made a promise to a class of first graders that she would put them through college if they graduated from high school, was truely inspirational.

Perhaps the emotion the article brought up was heightened because I had spent all day Saturday teaching girls to sing barbershop harmony. Working with kids is so fun.. their energy is contagious.

What a whirlwind weekend!

First the SURPRISE visit of Nance... Hmm, did the surprise go well? Let's just say, that it's not always the easiest thing for Barb to try to take control over my senses (through blindfold, white lies and long drives in the pouring down rain) when I'm tired and cranky on a Friday night. But the energy of having Nance here (almost) completely wiped out all that drama. Nance and I have been friends since 1976, and in recent years, we haven't been able to keep up the communication between here and Seattle the way we would have liked. But, everytime we get together, it's so electric and easy between us.

And then the massage on Sunday, a lovely long one that had me so relaxed I think I was snoring a bit, and then the second surprise of so many fabulous friends gathered in the yard for a feast.

Thanks to all of you who made it so special. You are the best friends anyone could ever have!
